Open Letter to Prime Minister:

Avoiding a No Deal Brexit

The Director General of the Confederation of Paper Industries (CPI), Andrew Large, has today (12th October 2018) written an open letter to the Prime Minister expressing deep concern about the possibility of a “No Deal” Brexit outcome and the resulting risk of disruption.

The text of that letter is reproduced in full below:

Dear Prime Minister,

Avoiding a No Deal Brexit

The UK’s Paper-based Industries employ some 56,000 people in highly skilled manufacturing roles, with a further 86,000 jobs being supported in other sectors. We contribute more than £4 Billion in gross value added to the UK economy, and we do so in regions of the UK outside London.

This industry is fully integrated across Europe, with products, machinery, services and people moving seamlessly between the EU28 Member States to provide high quality results for European and Global customers.

With fewer than 180 days to go to Brexit and the meeting of all current EU Leaders at the European Council in Brussels set for 18 October, we are deeply concerned about the possibility of a “No Deal” outcome and the resulting risk of disruption.

As an industry, we urge the Government to secure a Brexit deal that would:

  • Avoid the cliff edge and give business the certainty of a clear path from membership of the EU to the long-term future relationship between the UK and EU27;
  • Safeguard EU based Trade and Supply Chains, so that UK businesses can continue to supply EU customers (and vice-versa) without extra costs or disruption from tariffs or non-tariff barriers, or loss of access to skills across the EU;
  • Deliver a Sustainable and Competitive Energy and Environmental policy which facilitates the transition to low carbon manufacturing by working with business to drive investment and not by increasing costs.

Leaving without a deal would leave the UK’s Paper-based Industries exposed to continued uncertainty in investment, and risks damaging competitiveness for years to come.

Yours sincerely,

Andrew Large, Director General, CPI
