Food Contact Guidelines for the Compliance of Paper & Board Materials and Articles
New Guidelines are now available with which to confirm the suitability of paper for food contact applications. Building on a previous document, but completely updated, they will be an important tool for the future. Now in the final stage before publication, CEPI is holding a webinar on Friday 5 April to inform Members about the development and implications of these Guidelines, which will become the standard for companies that are producing food contact papers.
Paper packaging that is intended for food contact applications is governed by the “Framework Regulation” (1935/2004). While some other sectors have material specific legislation, and national legislation exists in some countries, none such exists across the EU for paper. In the absence of specific legislation, industry has worked to our voluntary Guidelines to confirm compliance.
UK law brings into force the EU Food Contact Regulations and, until such time as new UK legislation is brought forward, this will remain the case post-Brexit. Thus, the Food Contact Guidelines will remain of fundamental importance to the industry. At the CPI Health, Safety and Industry Conference in July (https://paper.org.uk/biennial/) we will address these developments in food contact in discussion with colleagues from the Food Standards Agency.
