The Confederation of Paper Industries Publishes its Annual Review 2020/21

10 May 2021

The Confederation of Paper Industries (CPI) is pleased to announce the publication of its Annual Review 2020/21 – Proven Resilience.

The last twelve months has been one of the most challenging periods in the history of the UK. The economy contracted by nearly 10% in 2020 and while the vaccine programme and successive lockdowns have reduced the current incidence of COVID-19 in the UK, attention is now very much focused on how to re-open the economy without increasing risks to health and wellbeing.

Throughout the pandemic, and through the process of the UK leaving the European Union, CPI has been at the forefront of supporting its members and the industry.

CPI Director General, Andrew Large, said: “I am incredibly proud of the work that the CPI Team has undertaken in these difficult circumstances to assist members and work with them and with Government to ensure that the industry has been able to operate with minimal disruption. For some sectors, it has been harder than for others, but the contribution of paper and its products to the quality of daily life is better understood than before.”

This Review also covers the multitude of issues that CPI has managed over the last year. Even with the pandemic at its height, there was plenty of activity in other areas such as environmental policy, energy policy, packaging issues, corrugated promotion, forestry, recycling, health and safety, industrial strategy and employment.

Looking ahead, there is a clear sense of focus in our future challenges. Global policy is moving quickly in the direction of further action on climate change and the linked issue of resource efficiency and circular economy. CPI’s work, in the coming years, will be to ensure that these policies build in the measures necessary for the competitiveness of UK industry so that we can grow manufacturing, high wage UK jobs and resilient, short, supply chains.

CPI’s Review 2020-2021 can be found here or via hard copy on request.
