CPI has published its Annual Review for 2021/22.
This special anniversary edition marks the 150th Anniversary of the organisation, which dates back to the founding of the Paper Makers’ Association of Great Britain and Ireland on 29th October 1872. CPI is proud that the organisation has such an extensive history of supporting the UK’s Paper-based Industries and this edition of the Annual review reflects upon our achievements past and present.
In addition to this commemorative Annual Review, CPI is further marking the Anniversary with its first ever Gold Paper Awards, Photography Exhibition and supporting publication and several charitable donations and bursaries.
This Review reflects upon the work of CPI over the past year. It shows that despite ongoing challenges, CPI continues to support and represent members across the breadth of our activities. Even with the pandemic at its height, we worked diligently on areas such as environmental policy, energy policy, packaging issues, corrugated promotion, forestry, recycling, health and safety, industrial strategy and employment.
The Annual Review highlights that the public health, economic and social environment continues to be one of the most challenging of recent years, with the effects of Brexit and COVID exacerbated by the appalling Russian invasion of Ukraine. While the economy rebounded strongly from the artificial COVID contraction, deeper seated issues of energy costs, labour shortages and consequent price inflation will remain influential for years to come.
CPI Director General Andrew Large says, “I am pleased to see the special 150th Anniversary edition of the Annual Review published, a publication which reflects on our past , present and future.
It is an outstanding achievement for any organisation to be able to trace its ancestry for a century and a half. As part of our commemorations, this review contains photographs from across the history of our industry, articles on both the past and future of paper and reminiscences of the CPI in days past.
Beyond its historical content, this annual review shows the continued hard work of the CPI Team – working to assist members and work with them and with Government to ensure that the industry can operate to its full potential. The review also considers challenges ahead, particularly in respect energy security, energy costs, competitiveness and promoting paper-based products as a sustainable material in a circular economy.”
